Preparing For School After Summer Tips
As a mum of four, getting back to school after the vacation is the hardest part of the vacation. With each passing year, getting over the vacation bloom once school starts has been something me and the kids struggle with. Which was why I came up with a few ideas to help ease the transition for the kids and myself from holiday mode to school mode.
The first step to transitioning back to work and school mode is to rehearse the typical school day. Avoid traveling at least a week before the day set for school to reopen. Make sure to get all the books and necessities in order. Pack the school bags and do daily rehearsals for a minimum of 2 days. I.e. you and your family can wake up early as on a school day and maybe even get dressed and go on a ride towards the school to see if you are able to make it on time. The best way to avoid being late and lethargic when school reopens is to get used to the usual school routines a few days ahead. So rehearsing them would be a really good idea.
Set an expectations list
Draw up a list of expectations that you and the kids would need to do during the school days. For instance, make breakfast by 7a.m. By setting an expectations list you are giving your kids and yourself a sense of direction. You can also involve your husband in this list so that he too will know his role. As surprising as it sounds, an expectations list has actually created a lot of peace in our household which was once full of havoc when it came to the first few days of school after a vacation. The kids know what they should be doing and in which time frame, this helps me a lot in maintaining my peace of my mind. Get a memory scrap book done
Getting the kids off vacation mode is the hardest task of it all. My four tend to believe that there is no end to vacation time. They often ask me if they can have a life where a vacation never ends! It was very hard to prepare them mentally to get back to school. Which was why I came up with the vacation memory scrap book done. I got all the best pictures from the vacation printed and gave the four of them four sets of pictures that they can paste in their own customized vacation album. And trust me when I say it was a huge hit! Not only did they enjoy the process but it also made them realize that the vacation is over and now it’s time to get back to school. Just yesterday, my kids got their scrapbooks completed with the front covers sporting each of them in their beach towels making a funny face.
